Presenting the Futures Trading Apprenticeship Programme (FTAP) - an immersive learning programme brought to you by Bursa Malaysia Derivatives and supported by the Capital Market Development Fund (CMDF).

Professional trading is often seen as an occupation with a high barrier to entry. There are various paths to enter the market, but your ultimate success relies on you. With hard work and patience, it can become a rewarding full-time career.

FTAP offers aspiring traders a fast-track to success! The 2-week programme conducted by seasoned professional traders is carefully designed to provide FTAP Apprentices with foundational knowledge on how to trade full-time in Malaysia's dynamic derivatives market. Upon completing FTAP, you will have the opportunity to join a proprietary trading firm as a trader or become a self-employed trader.

We are looking for 30 ambitious individuals to join the programme. No prior trading experience is necessary. If you are a motivated Malaysian with a passion in the capital markets, FTAP is the right fit for you. Applicants will be assessed and selected based on their knowledge and personal attributes.

Application Requirements:

  • You must be a Malaysian citizen who holds at least a diploma.
  • If you are a fresh graduate or in between jobs, we welcome you to apply.
  • You must possess a strong interest in trading and be willing to learn.
  • You must commit to full attendance at Bursa Malaysia for this programme, daily from 9am to 5pm.
  • It will be an advantage if you are familiar with strong numerical and analytical skills and the ability to make quick decisions in high stress situations.

14 - 20 April 2025

Based on the First Assessment result, top 100 applicants will be shortlisted and notified by the FTAP Training Provider, Synergy Link Capital Sdn Bhd. Shortlisted applicants will be required to complete the Second Assessment scheduled between 17 to 20 April 2025.

21 - 25 April 2025

Based on the Second Assessment result, up to 50 applicants will be further shortlisted and notified by Synergy Link Capital Sdn Bhd for online interview session scheduled between 23 to 25 April 2025.

30 April 2025

The final 30 successful applicants will be notified by Bursa Malaysia to complete payment for the Programme Fee. After verifying the receipt of payment, Bursa Malaysia will send an enrollment confirmation email to the successful applicants.

Module 201: Equity Index Analysis

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the concept of equity index valuation and the importance of Fair Value (FV) 
    in trading.
  • Familiarise with the index producer, composition, and types of equity indices.
  • Learn the factors affecting FV, including dividend forecasting and interest rates.
  • Grasp the events affecting FV, such as rebalancing.
  • Understand how to apply equity index valuation in practical trading scenarios.
  • Learn about market microstructure and flow analysis.
  • Master common strategies for trading the equity index calendar spreads.
  • Explore arbitrage between synthetic and exchange-listed spreads.
  • Study directional trading of calendar spreads and mean-reversion trading.

  • Understand the characteristics of commodities and their respective futures contracts.
  • Learn the fundamental considerations when trading commodity futures.
  • Study market microstructure and flow analysis for commodity trading.
  • Master common strategies for trading the commodity calendar spreads.
  • Explore trading the term structure and seasonal structure of commodities.

Upon completion of this module, apprentices will be able to:

  • Analyse the fundamental factors affecting the commodity futures market.
  • Apply market microstructure and flow analysis in commodity trading decisions.
  • Execute various commodity calendar spread strategies to capitalise on market opportunities.

Module 203: Advanced Trading Methodologies

Learning Objectives:

  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of various advanced trading strategies and their applications in derivatives trading.
  • Deepen knowledge of technical analysis and its tools for trading decision-making.
  • Master the principles of statistical arbitrage and its application in identifying trading opportunities.
  • Learn to identify and exploit trends using trend-following strategies.
  • Understand the concept of mean reversion and how to apply it in trading strategies.
  • Incorporate fundamental analysis into trading strategies for a holistic approach.
  • Enhance risk management skills with advanced techniques and understand the importance of position sizing.

  • Comprehend inter-product pairs trading.
  • Learn about portfolio management and managing currency exposure with currency futures.

Upon completion of this module, apprentices will be able to:

  • Apply the knowledge and skills acquired from Modules 201-203 in a simulated trading environment.
  • Utilise advanced trading systems and tools for improved trading performance.
  • Develop the ability to make informed trading decisions under the guidance of experienced traders.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in various trading strategies, including calendar spread strategies, inter-market spread strategies, and synthetic spreads.
  • Utilise inter-product pairs trading techniques to diversify their trading portfolio.
  • Manage their portfolio effectively and hedge currency exposure using currency futures.
     



 

FAQs

Who can apply for the Futures Trading Apprenticeship Programme (FTAP)?

FTAP is open to Malaysian citizens who hold at least a diploma. Fresh graduates from colleges or universities are encouraged to apply. However, please note that seats are limited to 30 per intake. Applicants will be assessed and selected based on their knowledge and personal attributes. We will only notify the successful applicants via email. For more detailed information, please refer to the full Terms and Conditions provided.

Do I need trading experience in the derivatives market to apply for the FTAP?

While trading experience can be beneficial, it is not a requirement to apply for FTAP. We welcome individuals from diverse professional backgrounds, life experiences, and educational qualifications. We encourage application from candidates who possess a strong interest in trading and demonstrate the competencies we are looking for.

Do I have to pay any fees to enroll in the FTAP?

Yes, there is a fee of RM621 (inclusive of 8% SST) to enrol in the FTAP upon successful application. This is a subsidised fee. For your information, the normal fee for a training programme with similar structure conducted by a recognised training provider starts at RM20,000. Please be sure to review the full Terms and Conditions for more details.

How do I make payment for the course fee?

You can use online transfer to make the payment for the programme fee. Once your application for FTAP is successful, the Organiser will send you a confirmation email containing the bank details for the payment. You are required to complete the payment and send a copy of the payment receipt to the Organiser within 7 days from the date you receive the confirmation email or not later than 6 May 2025, whichever is earlier.

Please note that the enrolment in the FTAP is only complete after the programme fees is received by the Organiser. Failure to complete the payment within this timeframe may result in disqualification from enrolling in the FTAP.

How am I assessment during the application process?

The Futures Trading Apprenticeship Program (FTAP) is designed for a limited seat of 30 Apprentices. The application deadline is 13 April 2025.​

Throughout the application process, your responses in the online assessment and completion of tasks given by the Training Provided will be thoroughly reviewed and evaluated. Your overall score will determine your ranking. If your total score places you among the top 30 applicants, you will be selected as an FTAP Apprentice. Applications received after the deadline (13 April 2025) will not be considered for the current intake.

How long does it take to complete the FTAP?

The total programme duration for FTAP is 12 days. FTAP will start with a 2-day classroom training (Modules 201-203), followed by a 2-week trading simulation class (Module 301).

What is the trading platform I will be using during the FTAP?

You will be given access to Trading Technologies Pro (TT) platform in Module 301 to experience simulated trading with live market data. TT is a premium professional trading platform with advanced trading features, such as:

  • Ability to view and trade multiple instruments simultaneously
  • Ability to construct and trade synthetic spreads
  • Ability to link with Excel for position updates
  • Provision of API for connecting to our internal risk monitoring system

How many intakes do you have?

With the support from the CMDF, we have planned nine intakes from 2023 to 2027. Since the programme launched in September 2023, three (3) intakes have been implemented, with 87 apprentices graduating from the programme. Three intakes are scheduled for each of 2025 and 2026. Each intake is limited to 30 apprentices.

 

Please note that the successful applicants are only allowed to enroll in this Programme ONCE. Multiple enrolments in any future intakes will not be entertained or considered.

What should I do if my application for this intake is unsuccessful or if I cannot attend this intake?

Don't worry if your application for this intake is unsuccessful or if you are unavailable to attend. Thanks to the support from the CMDF, we have planned nine intakes from 2023 to 2027, with three intakes scheduled for 2025. We encourage you to reapply during the next available intake. Stay updated on the latest information by following our social media channels.

I have submitted the application, am I allowed to resubmit the application?

No, you are not allowed to submit multiple submissions. Multiple submissions from the same applicant will not be considered for evaluation. The Organizer will only evaluate the initial submission of assessments received from each applicant.

Where does the FTAP take place? Can I attend the classes online?

The FTAP is an in-person training programme, it will be conducted at the Bursa Malaysia premise at Exchange Square, Bukit Kewangan, Kuala Lumpur.

  • 2-day classroom: Conference Room (Ground floor)
  • 10-day experiential session: Bursa Trading Arcade (Mezzanine floor)

FTAP does not offer online classes, you must commit to attending the programme in person, following the schedule set by the Organiser
