(Corrects day in first paragraph) SHANGHAI, Jan 23 (Reuters) - Most base metals declined in rangebound trade on Thursday amid a lack of clarity around U.S. President Donald Trump's policy plans, which investors fear could trigger trade wars. The three-month copper CMCU3 on the London Metal Exchange (LME) slid 0.4% to $9,187 a metric ton by 0231 GMT. The most-active copper contract on the SHFE SCFcv1 slid 0.6% to 75,100 yuan ($10,317.49) a ton. Metals prices began trending lower after Trump said his administration was discussing imposing a 10% tariff on imports from China starting Feb. 1, the same day that he previously said Mexico and Canada would face levies of around 25%. He also vowed duties on European imports, without providing further details. The U.S. President has also threatened "high levels of taxes, tariffs and sanctions on anything being sold by Russia to the United States and various other participating countries" if a deal to end the war in Ukraine is not reached soon. The U.S. dollar dipped to a more than three-week low earlier in the session, making greenback-priced commodities less expensive for holders of other currencies. The dollar index was last at 108.3, below the 26-month high of 110.17 touched last week. "We are taking a wait and see stance nowadays as we are not sure what kind of policies Trump might impose," a trader said. LME aluminium CMAL3 eased 0.5% to $2,620, tin CMSN3 lost 0.7% to $30,050, nickel CMNI3 fell 0.5% to $15,645, lead CMPB3 shed 0.3% to $1,961 and zinc CMZN3 dipped 1.3% to $2,863. SHFE aluminium SAFcv1 fell 0.5% to 20,220 yuan a ton, nickel SNIcv1 dipped 2.5% to 124,340 yuan, zinc SZNcv1 slid 1.8% to 23,715 yuan, lead SPBcv1 lost 0.2% to 16,665 yuan and tin SSNcv1 eased 0.7% to 248,150 yuan.
