In the first half of 2024, wind and solar energy surpassed fossil fuels in the EU for the first time, generating 30% of the region’s electricity compared to 27% from fossil fuels. This shift is attributed to an increase in renewable energy that outpaced the demand growth for fossil fuels, despite a 0.7% increase in electricity demand. Coal and gas generation fell by 24% and 14%, respectively. Thirteen EU member states, including Germany, Belgium, Hungary, and the Netherlands, generated more electricity from wind and solar than from fossil fuels during this period.
