Global energy-related CO2 emissions hit record high in 2023 – IEA.
Global energy-related emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) hit a record high last year, driven partly by increased fossil fuel use in countries affected by droughts that hampered hydropower production. Despite advancements in clean technology like wind, solar, and electric vehicles, emissions grew by 410 million tonnes (1.1%) to 37.4 billion tonnes. Scientists emphasize the urgent need for steep cuts in CO2 emissions to meet global climate goals and prevent runaway climate change.
