DEEP, DEEP DIVE
- Step 1: Register for a tax file (for first-time taxpayers only)
First, you’ll need to apply for an income tax reference number at any LHDN office. Or, you can register online via e-Daftar. Here is how to do it online:
On e-Daftar, click Online Registration Form to fill up your personal information. Remember to keep your application number once you’ve sent the application, as LHDN may ask you for it when you go to get your PIN number.
After sending in your application, you will need to upload a picture of your IC within 14 days.
Finally, go to the LHDN office to get your PIN number. You’ll use the PIN number to register/sign in at LHDN’s e-Filing website.
There is the option of getting your pin online, but most people that we have spoken to have been unsuccessful. If you have any information for us to add, do let us know here.
- Log in to the e-Filing website
On the e-Filing homepage, click First Time Login.
Enter the Pin Number you received from LHDN and your identification number (e. IC, passport, army number, police number)
- Choose the right tax form
The income tax form you use depends on your source of income, i.e. from employment, owning a business or others. Make sure you choose the right form.
- Under e-Filing, select e-Form to see all forms. employees with no business income, use the BE form .
- Check and fill in your details
- Ensure all personal details listed on the form are correct, such as contact details and bank details.
- Fill in income details following the table below:
Fill in your income details which you can get from your EA Form (Section C refer to total) (Make sure it includes your bonus too!)
Note: If you are earning other types of income you have to fill that in here too. For example, for rental income, you have to include your net rental income (after quit rent, etc). If you make other income from commissions, you will have to fill that in based on the CP58 form provided by the company paying you the commissions.
- Confirm that the organisation you have donated to is approved by LHDN. (Click link to check).
- Confirm that the PCB amount in your form is the same as your EA Form (Refer to Section D, No.1)
- Fill in tax reliefs and rebates that you are eligible for. For the full list of reliefs for the year 2019 (filing in 2020), please refer to this link.
Tax reliefs can help reduce your taxes. Make sure you use them correctly and do remember to keep all receipts for reliefs that you have claimed.
- Once you’ve put in all the information, go to the summary tab to check your total tax charged for the year.
- After checking that all the information is correct, continue to sign and submit the form.
- Pay income tax
If your total PCB for the year is higher than the income tax payable calculated, you’ll receive a refund. However, if the PCB amount is less, you’ll have to pay the difference.
There are a few ways you can pay tax: over the counter at LHDN, using the internet or telephone banking and at ATMs and Cash Deposit Machines, among others. You can refer to the full list of payment methods here.
As explained in our Guide on Tax Filing 101, filing taxes can have its advantages and if you take it step by step, it can be an easy process. So, take some time to understand how the process works and how to use the reliefs properly to maximise your benefits. If you need help, you can contact the LHDN hotline for e-Filing at 03-8911 1400.
